In 1966 the State Board State Board of Education in Maryland created Maryland's first regional community college, Chesapeake College. The school would serve the Mid-shore counties near the main campus. The school’s mission was to help students that would not be able to go to college and earn a degree. The name was chosen from a number of choices including Chesapeake Community College and Mid-Shore Community College.
The school's main campus is found on 170-acres on the intersection of Route 50 and Route 213. The main campus features 14 buildings. The satellite Cambridge Campus is located in a building in downtown Cambridge, Maryland. The main buildings on the school’s campus are named after the five counties in upper Eastern Shore. The school offers 13 certificate programs that are available to help students in honing their skills and providing knowledge that can be used as entry level employees into the workforce. These programs typically take a year to complete. In the past school year, there were 40 certificates awarded to graduating students. Among the most popular certificate programs includes the Surgical Tech program and the Food Service program.
The athletic program of the school is called Skipjack athletics. The school is very active in team sports with competitive programs in basketball, softball, baseball, soccer and volleyball. The school colors are navy blue and Kelly green and the school nickname are the Skipjacks.
